Saudi Arabia Invests Heavily in Desalination Projects and Considers Privatizing Sector

The head of the General Organization for Sea Water Desalination (GOSWD) in Saudi Arabia, said the privatization plan of a water desalination project in the Kingdom was submitted to the Supreme Economic Council, which is scheduled to discuss it this year with the aim of starting the project at the beginning of 2009.

GOSWD investments in desalination projects under implementation in various regions of the Kingdom are estimated at more than 20 billion riyals ($5.33 billion), in addition to a number of small enterprises, including 6 small stations in some areas in the Kingdom, and a desalination plant expected to be completed during 2010, GOSWD head added.
